Exploring 100 Million Jobs: JA Connects Students to Ocean Opportunities During Earth Week

April 21, 2026

Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast marked Earth Week 2026 with a focus on the vast opportunities connected to the ocean and the responsibility to protect it. Through its virtual experience, Earth Week: Marine Industries & Beyond, students are introduced to a world of careers shaped by the marine economy while building a deeper understanding of the role healthy oceans play in thriving communities.

Across the globe, the ocean economy supports approximately 100 million jobs, spanning fields such as marine science, engineering, tourism, conservation, and the arts. In Palm Beach County alone, the marine industry supports around 22,000 jobs each year, from boat building and yacht operations to research, conservation, and marine services. As a coastal community, this JA location is uniquely positioned to connect students to these pathways, helping them see how their interests can translate into meaningful careers that contribute to both economic growth and environmental stewardship.

Through partnerships with organizations like the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, students gain exposure to professionals who bring these careers to life. Speakers include innovators in marine engineering and advanced manufacturing, researchers dedicated to protecting ocean ecosystems, a photographer capturing the beauty and urgency of the natural world, and a leader in maritime education focused on safety and responsible boating. Together, they highlight how the future of the marine industry depends not only on skilled professionals but on a shared commitment to sustainability.

By connecting young people to the breadth of careers within the marine industry, JA is helping them understand that the future of work and the future of the planet are closely linked. Students are not only exploring career possibilities, but they’re also gaining the knowledge and perspective needed to care for the oceans that support communities around the world.

“We believe it’s critical that students are exposed to the full range of career opportunities available to them, especially those right here in our own backyard” shared Katie Thompson, President of Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches & Treasure Coast. “Learning experiences like this help students see the real-world connections between what they’re learning in the classroom and the diverse careers in industries like marine science and environmental stewardship. When students can envision themselves in these roles, it opens the door to future pathways they may not have otherwise considered.”
