CHINESE STUDENTS WIN Worldwide Online Contest Builds Students' Entrepreneurship and Work-Readiness Skills Colorado Springs, Colo. - Junior Achievement today announced Team "Heaven899" representing Junior Achievement of China, as the winners of the 2011 Global JA Titan Challenge, a worldwide virtual competition designed to test students' business knowledge and skills. Eight teams convened in Purchase, N.Y., from August 14-18 for the contest's final round. The Global JA Titan Challenge, sponsored by MasterCard Worldwide, is based on JA Titan®, Junior Achievement's online simulation that allows teams of high school and university students to act as chief executive officers of virtual manufacturing companies. The teams are prompted to make decisions that affect the profitability and sustainability of their companies as they attempt to outperform their competitors in profit, sales and market share. By exercising critical fiscal and managerial decision-making, students get firsthand experience in the challenges of operating a successful global enterprise. The Challenge was comprised of three rounds of competition, beginning in February 2011. Sixty-four teams of three to five members moved from the preliminary round to the semi-finals. Eight teams-six from China, one from Kazakhstan and one from Russia-had the skills to make it to the face-to-face final round. First-place honors, along with a cash prize of US $3,000, went to Team Heaven899. Second place, and a US $2,000 prize, went to Team "Yaace845," also from China. Team "Simo2011" representing Junior Achievement of Russia, placed third and received US $1,000. Fourth place and US $500 went to Team "Aero 165" from China; Team "75rm4r9" from China rounded out the top five and received a US $250 prize. "To succeed in the Global JA Titan Challenge, participants must demonstrate quick yet effective decision-making across a variety of disciplines in a compressed timeframe. It is JA's most intense competition; participants must demonstrate solid entrepreneurial skills and financial knowledge," said Sean C. Rush, president and chief executive officer of JA Worldwide®. "Through the Challenge and the JA Titan simulation, Junior Achievement empowers young people to experience and excel in the global economy's competitive environment." "As a long-time partner of Junior Achievement, we are excited to be part of the Global JA Titan Challenge," said Patricia Devereux, group head, Corporate Philanthropy & Citizenship at MasterCard Worldwide. "This event brings classroom lessons to life, putting students in the CEO's seat and making decisions that drive performance and profitability. By advancing financial literacy and inspiring entrepreneurship, participating students will be well positioned to unlock their potential." MasterCard Worldwide is sponsoring the Global JA Titan Challenge for the first time; however, since 2002, they have invested nearly $2 million in Junior Achievement operations around the world, and is actively engaged with local JA boards at the local, regional and global levels.
